Lottie’s Grave

Lottie’s Grave lies outside of Homer Nebraska. And, since its Halloween and you’ve been there, I want everybody’s best Lottie’s Grave story.

Lottie Edwards’ grave is located a few miles outside of Homer, Nebraska. There are many competing stories about the life (and after-life) of Lottie Edwards.

The Background:

Version 1:

Lottie was a Sioux woman married to a trapper. They lived in a little cabin along Blackbird Bend on the Missouri river. This version claims that Lottie’s husband surprised Lottie and her lover by arriving home from a hunting trip earlier than expected. Lottie’s husband killed her lover and cut Lottie’s head off before throwing her body over a bluff into the river.

Version 2:

Lottie lost her mind when her husband died. Her neighbors proclaimed her a witch.

Version 3:

Lottie was a Sioux healer. Afraid of her, the towns people hung her by a tree in her yard. In order to prevent her from seeking revenge, they cut off Lottie’s head before burying her.

What’s supposed to happen:

  • Rumors that Lottie’s grave was robbed shortly after her death and each of the three young men that robbed it died violently, shortly thereafter;
  • A ghostly Cadillac would try to run you off the gravel road;
  • A white horse with red eyes galloping toward you as you tried to enter the cemetery;
  • Grass missing from the grave site in the shape of a body;
  • Glowing green mist;
  • If you left a beer for her, she would empty it without ever opening it;
  • If you called on her she was supposed to appear in the trees in white;
  • Supposedly you could hear her crying at night;
  • The farmer across the street likes to shoot salt-pellets at kids;
  • That’s all I know or can remember.

    Give us your stories.

    1. its back behind some bushes from what i can remember it is up a small hill towards the back of the cemetary. And I remember it was all by itself….We went there in college I grew up in Sioux City Iowa and went to Briar Cliff College from 1981 to 1985.. we went in like 1983 or 84. it scared the heck out of us. the lights in the area where no lights should be were there.. we spent an hour or two looking for it. I was just telling my wife about it. She is a paranormal investigator for TAZPRS here in Phoenix. Tthere were 4 of us and i remember leaving there fast and yelling at each other to “hurry up and get in the car”… on our way to the cemetary we even stopped on the railroad tracks to see if someone would push our car off of them but nothing happened there.. but seeing the lights scared us, and then going up and in the back of the cemetary behind some bushes it really gets scarey…I will never forget that trip…

      I did a search for Lotties Grave on Google to show her and found this sight.. I can’t believe there is this many sights looking fo that grave and I was there so long ago.. that freaks me out a little!!

    2. To Edith – From researching LG, there have been many accounts of a very large white “dog” making appearances around the grave area, mainly along the road. I have heard stories about this white dog running along moving cars, even bumping into them. I have never heard of the “ghost car” however.

      Here’s my story, straight up with no extra drama added:

      It was the summer of 1990 or 1991. My friends and our girl friends (6 of us total) decided to visit LG one night. I can’t say for sure but I know it was a weekend night and there was a good chance it was a Friday night. One of the party had been there before, so we never had any problem finding it. On the way out of course we shared the story about the bridge making loud “creaks” when you crossed it. Two creeks meant someone was going to be in danger, one meant you were okay. We did get the one loud creak, and it was more distinguished than I was expecting. While creepy that wasn’t really anything to get freaked about. However, almost instantly while going over the bridge some of us noticed what looked like a large white figure about 30 yards down the road. There are deep ditches on either side and thick bushes/trees, so you can imagine what it looked like with headlight beams shooting down the road. The figure crossed into the beams and seemed to acknowledge our presence for a second or two, then it kind of lurked into the ditch where it was too dark to see it anymore. When we drove by the spot some of us looked down there but saw nothing (not that we would being so dark). I never really thought much of this until I read other accounts of seeing the large white dog, and once I read that I got chills. Anyway, we came to the entrance of the grave yard, a large steel gate blocked our Suburban from going any further. We parked up within a couple feet of the gate, this part I remembered very clearly because I was already nervous and wanted to be able to get in the car asap if needed. We headed up the hill with graves all around and thick trees on the immediate left. It felt like someone was watching us the entire time, mainly from the trees. I will say there was a odd amount of noise coming from the trees, like branches snapping and whatnot. We got to the top corner where LG is located and I was actually sad at what I saw. You could see all the results of the vandalism over the years. I really felt bad for how disrespectful people had been. While we were looking at it, one of my friends (much braver than myself) slipped into the trees and came out screaming at us. This obviously scared the hell out of us and the girls were pissed. We had a laugh and headed back down the hill. On the way down I stopped and asked my friend that went into the trees if he had the keys, at which one of the girl friends said that she had them “right here” and pulled them out from her pocket. I pointed down the hill and said, “then who the f— moved the car??”. The suburban was literally 15 yards from where we parked it. It was a automatic and LOCKED, so it didn’t roll and someone could not have reached in and put it in neutral. Needless to say we were all freaked because there was no explanation of how this happened. We got in and got the hell out of there. That was it, never been back since.

      It is very odd though that there have been multiple posts about cars being moved at the entrance. Keep this site going and let me know if anyone else has seen the “white dog”. I know it sounds lame, but it was really quite creepy in how it moved and looked at us.

    3. I went there with a few friends (or four.) A couple of us were at the top of the cemetery, a couple towards the bottom.

      Well me and my friend were just sitting there goofing around with our video camera, not seeing anything (not really expecting to,) when we distinctly heard the sound of laughing children. We looked at each other, stood up, and ran recklessly down the hill.

      I’ve never heard anything about children’s laughter there, but it was close and personal.

    4. i’ve got photos of Lottie and the true story.. as i am her great grandson… Lottie Edwards is the mother of my late grandfather Oren Edwards….. i’m going to stop with the information here because i have revealed this information to people in the past and it turned into an almost stalking behavior from people… I will read the replies and decide if it’s reasonable to respond…

    5. as for the creaky bridge… it’s called three creak bridge. it supposed to be bad if you hear three creaks.. as per some high school kids died taking the sharp turn on the east side of the bridge a long long time ago.. and the legend grew from there.. and as for the neighbor who shoots salt pellets.. it isn’t at the nomer cemetary where Lotties’ grave is at.. its supposed to be at a farmers house who lives across from a grave on a hillside.. they call it greenie’s grave.. and rumor is that the guy fires a shot to keep people from gathering on the road in front of his farm… not a bad idea..

    6. I have never been there myself but my aunt has gone a number of times and has told me stories of her going. Here are some of what I can remember her telling me, no exagerations or added drama.

      One time my aunt had gone with a group of maybe two or three other friends and had a lot of things happen. When they first arrived they drove up and parked next to a ditch by her grave. They all went to the grave and were just messing around when they saw glowing balls aver Latties grave. They obviously got freaked out so they ran to their car and drove off. I dont recall her telling me of any troubles leaving the graveyard itself but she did tell me that when they were leaving on the road right infront of the grave yard they were chased off the road by a white car with bright headlights that dissapered when it got close. When it got close my aunt looked and saw nobody driving the car, they all freaked out then the car dissapered. When they got home they parked their car and got out. They walked around the car and on the back end of the car above the trunk there were two hand prints in the dirt of the car as if someone had tried to stop the car when trying to dirve away. That night they all slept at my aunts house in the same room. They had a few people sleeping on the bed and a few on the floor. My aunt had told me that she had woke up in the night and looked over to see a white figure standing over her friend on the bed. I don’t know if this was her mind just playing games with her after that night, or if something had actually follwed her home, but i

      This is no lie and I am not exagerating ANYTHING. I told you all that I could remember from my aunt telling me. Now will I ever go to Lotties Grave? NO.

    8. East Grad…where did you hear/read about a dog? It happened to me too, and my dad and my uncle on separate occasions in the 70′s (and they didn’t know each other at the time). I’m very curious.

      Here’s a link for my story on my blog:

    9. This is for Scott, Lottie’s great-grandson. I grew up in Sioux City and my mother grew up in Homer, so we have heard a lot of these stories over the years. I can’t dispute them or agree with them since I have never been to Lottie’s grave at night. My hobby is genealogy and over the years I have walked many a cemetery. Because of that, a few years ago, I started putting small artificial flower bouquets on many graves every Memorial Day and one of them was Lottie’s, her husband and the daughter who is buried next to them. The daughter’s stone is nearly unreadable because of vandalism. I’m trying to find out her birth and death dates. Would you know that info or could you point me in the direction of someone who could help me? I appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks.

    10. Lottie had 4 kids as an Edwards… Edith Bresnan, Oren Edwards, Fern Messeschmidt and an daughter who died at age 11 i believe from sickness… Lottie was also married before to a man named Phillips.. we supposedly have a family picture of her as a Phillps.. she had 3 children as a Phillps… Only names i get from our family recoreds are Goldie, Gladys and Morris….. not sure of the Mr’ Philiips who is the father of these kids.. but i belieive i can find out… Of the Edwards kids.. Oren (my grandfather) died in the early 80″s with complete alzheimers.. Fern died around the mid 90′s with alzhiemers too..and Edith died in 05 ir 06..i cant remember.. and you guessed it with alzhiemers… i am going to dig up more information and i’m not real good in the computer world but i will try to post a photo of Lottie asi have several……

    11. just went there and freaked out im from sergeant bluff and a couple of us went there and first we got up there and found the fake grave but we looked towards the woods and saw a light going off and on in different places and was too blue and goin to fast for a firefly then at the cars i herd a girl screaming coming right from the grave then driving away i herd it again and then i went passed it again and it was almost a laughing sound. also my friend looked up at it when leaving and saw the outline of a person standing next to a gravesite

    12. I went twice last fall but the only thing of note that happened was when we left the first time. We pulled out onto the road that weaves along the hills and edge of the woods on the way back to Homer when we noticed a car behind us. Eventually it pulled in close and I moved to the side to let it pass. It was then that I noticed it was a dark colored Cadillac (not white like has been reported) which immediately picked up speed and was quickly out of sight around the curves of the road.

    13. sorry to burst your bubble, however I have lived in Homer my entire life just as my family has. When I was younger and would hear the rumors, I was very curious. My grandmother knows a relative of Lottie’s and I was able to talk with them. The stories surrounding her death are untrue and she actuall passed away at the age of 78 in a Norfolk hospital due to heart degeneration. She was buried next to her daugter Alice who died at the age of 11 from pneumonia. Residents of the town don’t really like that people go there due to the thousands of dollars of tax payers money that go into the headstones that have been vandalized. I’m not saying that any of you have done that but it has happened. So if you do decide to go looking for the grave all that I ask is to please be respectful and remember you are in a cemetary and someone’s loved one is buried there. Thank you!

    14. Well considering i own the property around taylor cemetary..if you come in there i would be warned…people are usually out late at night on our property hunting…dont get hurt

    15. Hey guys I went to the cemetary 3 times. It’s Taylor Cemetary right? From what I was reading I coul not find the grave for the life of me. I even went alone nothing happened. Anyone willing to tell me the exact location and how to get there from the 2 short stone pillars. Then I’ll post on everything that happens? Greatly appreciated!

    16. I was only 15 years old at the time with my first & ONLY one time experience at Lottie’s grave .. My Brother & I with some friends ( total of 6 people ) drove to Lottie’s grave .. We drove over the wooden ( or steel bridge ) that leads you to the Cementary , and the Bridge did Sqeek once indicating the rumor that Lottie is around .. we arrived at the Cementary and walked around trying to find her grave , but had no luck finding it … so we sat there and drank a few beers and nothing happened to us at that time , so we all decided to leave in my Brother’s car .. there was three of us in the front seat and three in the back seat .. as we were leaving the cementary and and passed by the Farmer’s house that lives across from the cementary a little down the road from the cementary .. my brother’s wife who was sitting in the middle in the front seat , immediately told my Brother to stop the car , that she thought she seen something from out the back window of the Car walk across the road that was a white color .. so my Brother stopped car , and tried to Back the car up in reverse a little down the road in the area where his wife seen the object walk across the road .. as my Brother was backing up the car , he couldn’t see very well out the back window of the car because it was total darkness and besides our other friends sitting in back seat , thier heads were in the way to where he could see where he was backing up .. well that’s when our experience with Lottie Happened we all thought to ourselves , because as my Brother was Backing up car , the car ended up backing up over a little small concrete slab bridge with no sides to it up , or no railings on both sides , and the car went over the one side of bridge and ended up doing a one time Flip/Roll upside down into a little ditch that looked like it used to be a little water creek .. the top Hood of the car got completely smashed down and some windows got broken out but pinned all of us in the car to where we couldn’t get out .. then someone ended up breaking out the back window of the car to where there was just enough space to where we were all able to crawl out of the car and climb up out of the ditch back up on the road .. we stood there for a little bit wondering what the hell happened and then what are we going to do now .. how we going to get out of here .. so we all thought about walking to the farmer’s house who lived across from the cementary .. we knocked on the farmer’s door and he answered the door .. we explained to him what happened , and he then said to us what the hell you kids doing up there at the cementary anyway this late at night .. we asked him if he could help us out , and the farmer was nice enough to do that .. he got out his John Deer tractor and a big long log chain to pull the car up out of the ditch and pulled it to the farmer’s property .. we asked if we could keep the car at his place over night and we would be back in the morning when it was daytime to pick car up and have it towed away .. the farmer was nice enough to give us a ride into city limits of homer in town .. and then we called one of my other Brother’s to come and pick us all up and take us home !!! .. that is my story and the ( ONLY ) one time experience of me being at the cementary and something happening at Lottie’s grave !!!

    17. I was up there today with my daughter and her friend. We went in the daytime so not to cause problems and to see if we could find the grave. There was alot of hunting going on around us and alot of traffic! Someone even stopped down by our car while we were in the cemetery. (I didnt know before going about the actual grave outside of it.) We found her grave after alot of looking and nothing unusual happened…thank God! We were leaving and it was getting dark, we had someone stop and ask why we were there, its very apparent the locals are tired of the company.
      I, like most, have heard the rumors growing up in Sioux City. I even went there in high school but never found it (nothing happened either except the creaky bridge). My daughter and her friend are very interested by it so I took them out to see it…they were disappointed at nothing happening. After coming home, I found this site. There are so many stories about Lottie and sounds like alot are infused with surrounding stories. I was surprised that she died in ’55. I always thought it was long before that. After reading her great grandson’s remarks, I am just curious as to how all this was started about her? She sounded pretty normal to me and she even had a big family, some of whom have only passed recently. How did they let this get so out of hand?
      Just Curious…
