    Hey Brian, great site!

I too wondered why I couldn’t find any nutritional information on coke’s website about the sugar content in a can of coke. I called them up and they explained to me that sugar is not listed as sugar in their coke nutrition page, they list it as carbohydrates. On the water page they list it as sugar. In addition they measure it according to 8 oz. servings. I don’t know about you but I’ve never gotten an 8 oz. can of coke. In a 8 oz serving of coke classic there are 27 grams of sugar. In 12 oz. there are 40 grams, and in a 16 oz serving about 52 grams of sugar. I used to do the 20 oz. bottle which is about 66 grams of sugar. Funny thing is we only need about 22-34 grams of sugar a day, what the body can’t use as energy will be stored as fat.

I’m reading Devil in the White City right now and wondered where the pictures were. . .Thanks to you, I have a much better idea of the fair. We live about 20 miles from Jackson Park and plan on taking a trip sometime this summer.

    Thanks again! Great walking tour.

I came across this website this morning. It is a artist/photographer/environmentalist. Despite what you think of his views. There is some neat stuff here and some interesting facts. My particular favorite is the one regarding Energizer.

I recently saw an article in the news that the City of Chicago wants to hire 400 new police officers. While I would normally say, yeah, go ahead…where are all of those officers that used to be monitoring our intersections for cars running red lights? Weren’t those cameras supposed to reduce number of accidents and free up police to do more important things like fight crime?

Any idea if there is a correlation between the number of intersection cameras, neighborhood cameras, crime rates (reported and unreported), and number of police officers on the force?

I actually read the link from Tom. It’s more of the same dissent we’ve been hearing about ever since Gore’s movie came out, just with a notable person attached (some guy from Australia). I did like the comment that the Obama administration is trying to jam this capntrade thing through fast because they know that support for the underlying “green science” is getting weaker by the day. Which begs the question, if they are rushing this because they know they won’t have science to back them up for much longer, then that means they know the legislation won’t achieve the stated goals of the program. So if they don’t care about the stated goals, why do they want the legislation so badly, particularly considering the risks involved to an already weak economy.

Ha! Its more about who’s important, Niki or Tom. But the global warming thing is getting its own thread. Shortly.

  • Jun 26, 2009

    Niki

Well, at least we know what is important!

Those pictures look like tryouts for the adult film industry. Terrible.

Also, of note. Nikis comment about “hunky soccer players” got multiple responses, while the comment about global warming went ignored. ;)

Well that’s certainly a lot better than these pictures from the NY Times before the 2002 World Cup…

What a joke, why not give away $6000 for anyone who buys a car that gets 35 mpg or more regardless of what you trade in. This piecemeal garbage really kills me.

Say a car at gets 100,000 miles in its life. At 17 gpm thats 5,900 gallons of gas. At 19 gpm thats 5,260 gallons. Seriously we are paying $3,500 for 640 gallons of gas. That breaks down to $5.47/gallon. What a joke.

    Mike Beacom

    Joe,

Funny you mention this, as this is EXACTLY what my co-worker told me yesterday he planned to do. He’s trading in an ‘01 Pathfinder that gets about 17mpg for a new Chevy Traverse/Buick Enclave that gets about 19mpg.

I’ve come to the conclusion that this portion of the stimulus is just a bullshit way to help car companies masquerading as a green initiative. The whole “green” thing is really just a ruse anymore, it’s been coopted by the left as the excuse for almost any action they can think to take. It peaves me because I actually care about trying to be “green” but the whole thing has turned into this trendy nonsense that only marginally achieves the actual goals.

    Brian,
I’d be really interested to hear why someone would get the same amount of money if they trade in a truck/suv but only get a smaller increase in mpg than someone trading in a car. Any chance you can look into this? Since i don’t trust detroit or their lobby, I would guess someone in congress caved on this one so that people would trade in their older SUV for a newer one that might get a couple extra mpg.

Hi Beth, or do I still call you Mrs. Karpuk? Either way, thanks for solving that little mystery.

I often reflect on the teachers I had growing up and wish I might run into them again so I could thank them for the gifts they gave me, to let them know that being hard on us, while probably difficult, really did us good. I’m sure they know it, but I have to think it would be nice to hear a little more. Ms. Augustine was definitely one of the hard ones, but I don’t regret for a second having her class. I’m actually really glad I did. I always tell myself that some day I’ll go visit Heelan and see who’s still there and I never get around too it. I’m sure by the time I do, everyone I knew there will be gone, which is kind of sad.

Mike, I admit it. I tipped off Ms. Augustine about your comments-I confess!! She thought it was really funny.

Finished The Wire Season 5 last night. Thanks for the tip. My wife and I really enjoyed it. A lot of the reviews were a bit hypberbolic (greatest TV series ever?). But yeah, it was good. I’ll miss the ol’ Maryland crew but I have to say, I was very satisfied with the series finale, which is rare.

“Why Chris? You looking to join a cult or something?”

I was concerned that his comment was inspired by my questions about the Fanboys movie.

Forget Gino’s East. Tell your friend to try Art of Pizza. http://www.yelp.com/biz/the-art-of-pizza-chicago Same style deep dish, but better in my opinion.

Hadn’t heard of Fanboys. I’ll have to look into it….

It’s a spoof/homage to the Star Wars movies, George Lucas and the nerdy Star Wars fans. It looks hilarious if you’re into that sort of thing, completely riddled with inside jokes and whatnot. If you can’t recite the star wars movies line for line, you MIGHT not be interested.

  • Feb 11, 2009

    Niki

I guess I am not nerdy enough..what is Fanboys?

  • Feb 11, 2009

    Mike Beacom

So, is anyone else out there nerdy enough to want to see Fanboys in it’s limited release this weekend? I mention it because Brian is in Chicago, one of the few cities playing the movie. A super nerdy coworker of mine is actually flying his girlfriend out for the weekend, for a little shopping, a little Gino’s East, and a little Fanboys. I’m so jealous.

Most recent thoughts on global warming: Every generation thinks they’re going to be the last generation. That’s why the Baby Boomers keep spending all our money.

    Hmmm….yeah….

While all the other stories that I link to are manually put on the site, I’ve now automated the “Today in History” and the Robin Hood. I would always forget to do Today and I just had the hardest time finding anything for Robin Hood. Its amazing, even on the internet, how hard it is to find “good” news.

Fortunately, I found a way to extract just certain items from Fark using YahooPipes (which is incredible, for anybody that wants to mess with RSS feeds). Unfortunately, because its automated, from time to time there is likely to be an item or two for which a Fark user has tagged as a “Hero” which you might not think is Robin Hood worthy. If it gets too bad, let me know.

Glad to see the Robin Hood section back, though I doubt making a porn while flying is a good deed. =)
