About Me

My name is Brian Karpuk. I am just a young man in my thirties who has decided after no small amount of soul searching that I am going to attempt to make a living writing on the internet. To be fully honest, I’m not exactly sure how this is going to work out. I don’t know whether you would call me a writer, an internet entrepreneur, an online marketer or just a bum that doesn’t want to get a real job. No matter what you call me, my goal is simple: to provide my readers with honest intellectual thought and writing; to provide you with links to interesting, funny, thought provoking or just plain dumb items that I find. I’m not trying to change the world but I will try my best to make you think. I certainly don’t profess to have all the answers. I have very few answers, mostly just questions. Questions that I hope will make you think.

I was born in Iowa and over the years I’ve lived in various areas of the country. I did my undergrad at Creighton University in Omaha, NE. Not a bad school and I mostly enjoyed my time there. Time passed and eventually I moved on to law school at Georgetown University in D.C. Not a bad school, not a bad town but didn’t ever really have a lot of love for either. And so when it came time to move on from there I settled in the great little town of Chicago. Home of the Bulls. Home of the Fire.

If you’d like to contact me, there are any variety of ways to do it. The best is probably to email me at brian@newsburglar.com. Or, you might also want to add me as a friend on your favorite social media websites. My profile on Mixx is probably the easiest, but I can also be found at Digg, StumbleUpon, Twitter and LinkedIn.

Comment Policy

“Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in his shoes. That way, when you do criticize him, you’re a mile away, and you have his shoes.”

I believe that comments are an important part of a website’s experience, providing both interaction between readers and myself and between the readers themselves. As a newbie blogger however, I would like to avoid having to expend too much time administering the site or editing comment spam. Moreover, as much as I personally enjoy reading comments sections for specific sites and articles, I think we can all acknowledge that comment sections too often devolve into flame wars, personal attacks and idiots trying to shout over each other. My goal is to find a better way to provide a forum for a wide variety of voices while maintaining something of a tight reign on the discussion.

By tight reign I certainly don’t mean that I want to censor discussion. I believe that the ability to listen to opposing viewpoints and contrary ideas is essential to proper discourse. Its just that, if those viewpoints are not properly expressed in complete thoughts and attributed to someone who is at least partially stripped of anonymity, then the commenter loses the ability to filter his own thoughts. A commenter that is freed of all societal rebuke is probably too free a commenter.

I realize that this is a pretty long explanation of my comment policy. I think its necessary for two reasons however. The first is that I don’t want to turn off potential readers that are used to sites which maintain a more open comment policy. More than that however, it is some form of invitation to those readers that are looking for a site where they can contribute to a more rational, reasonable discussion forum than is typically found on the internet.

If you would like to be a registered member of this exclusive Newsburglar club, please feel free to email me at comments@newsburglar.com. Please understand however if I don’t immediately accept your request. Please also understand what I would expect of you. If you don’t feel that you would be interested in writing probably at least a paragraph with respect to your comments, you probably are not the type of contributor that I am looking for.

Given this, there are several ways that we can strike up a conversation, address issues or air grievances. If you have your own site, obviously I would love it if you were to address my posts on your site. If you do not have your own public means of responding to a post, please feel free to email me at comments@newsburglar. In the instances where I believe that your response will clarify, expand upon or contradict my opinions in a significant way and enhance the overall intellectual experience of this site, I will attempt to draft a new post centered around your response or post the item in the comment section myself.
