How Much Does the United States Spend on Health Care?

The U.S. Census Bureau’s 2009 Statistical Abstract has been released. I thought it would be fun to go through it and note the more interesting items, starting with Health and Nutrition.

United States Health Care Expenditures (In billions):

Type of Expenditure 1990 2006
Total $714.0 $2,105.5
Annual percent change 11.8% 6.7%
Percent of GDP 12.3% 16.0%
Private expenditures $427.3 $1,135.2
Public expenditures $286.7 $970.3

Two things jump out at me. The first is that betwen 1990 and 2006 health care spending has jumped from 12.3% of GDP to 16%.

The second is that government spending as a percentage of percentage of total healthcare expenditure has jumped from 40.1% to 46.1%.
