The U.S. Census Bureau’s 2009 Statistical Abstract has been released. I thought it would be fun to go through it and note the more interesting items, starting with Health and Nutrition.
United States Health Care Expenditures (In billions):
Type of Expenditure | 1990 | 2006 |
---|---|---|
Total | $714.0 | $2,105.5 |
Annual percent change | 11.8% | 6.7% |
Percent of GDP | 12.3% | 16.0% |
Private expenditures | $427.3 | $1,135.2 |
Public expenditures | $286.7 | $970.3 |
Two things jump out at me. The first is that betwen 1990 and 2006 health care spending has jumped from 12.3% of GDP to 16%.
The second is that government spending as a percentage of percentage of total healthcare expenditure has jumped from 40.1% to 46.1%.
