Why haven’t I paid any attention to politics before this year? Its awesome.

So, the other day, McCain gets asked how many homes he has. Usually a pretty simple question of course, but, well, Cindy McCain is pretty wealthy and has more than a single two bedroom bungalow to her name. As a result, McCain responded that he’d have to check with his staff to determine how many homes they own.

After some checking, it was determined that the McCain’s own seven homes.

Barack Obama had this to say this morning on McCain:

“Now think about that – I guess if you think that being rich means you gotta make five million dollars, and if you don’t’ know how many houses you have, then it’s not surprising that you might think the economy is fundamentally strong!”

“But if you’re like me and you’ve got one house – or you were like the millions of people who are struggling right now to keep up with their mortgage so that they don’t lose their home, you might have a different perspective.”

And then came the inevitable ad:

Pretty powerful ad. But, as they say, you shouldn’t throw stones at people who own seven glass houses if you yourself own a glass house that you were helped into by a guy who has just been convicted of bribing politicians.

“On June 15, 2005, Obama bought a gorgeous house in Hyde Park for $1.65 million – $300,000 below the list price. Rezko bought the empty but attractive lot next door from the same seller at the same time; Obama would later buy part of Rezko’s lot, overpaying him. The transaction was shady, but not obviously corrupt. The overall Obama-Rezko relationship looks worse.”

This evening McCain hit back with his own ad.

And from Brian Rogers, a McCain spokesman:

“Does a guy who made more than $4 million last year, just got back from vacation on a private beach in Hawaii and bought his own million-dollar mansion with the help of a convicted felon really want to get into a debate about houses? Does a guy who worries about the price of arugula and thinks regular people “cling” to guns and religion in the face of economic hardship really want to have a debate about who’s in touch with regular Americans?

“The reality is that Barack Obama’s plans to raise taxes and opposition to producing more energy here at home as gas prices skyrocket show he’s completely out of touch with the concerns of average Americans”

Apparently the McCain Campaign has also said that after this Obama ad, the gloves are coming off on Obama’s relationship with Reverand Wright and William Ayers. Ayers, for the uninformed is an unrepentant former member of the Weather Underground who has made his way into the polite Chicago society.

This is gonna get naaaasty. I love it.
